Clomid is the brand name for the drug clomiphene citrate. It is taken by mouth and is used to encourage ovulation or make it happen more often. If you have ovulatory dysfunction and/or polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and haven't been able to get pregnant on your own, your doctor or gynecologist may give you Clomid. Clomid is made by Sanofi-Aventis US LLC, a pharmaceutical company in Bridgewater, New Jersey, that was founded in 1950. Each tablet contains 50 mg of clomiphene citrate USP and several other inactive ingredients, such as lactose, sucrose, cornstarch, and magnesium stearate. Clomid works by making you ovulate, which makes it more likely that you will get pregnant. It works by tricking the brain into thinking that estrogen levels are lower than they really are. This causes the pituitary gland to start making more follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) (LH). Higher levels of FSH tell the ovary to make one or more egg follicles, which will grow and be released when ovulation happens. High levels of LH cause ovulation, and when the ovaries release more eggs, there are more chances for a sperm to reach an egg. Clomid is usually taken for 5 days in a row right after the start of a woman's period. Most of the time, doctors tell their patients to take one, two, three, or even four pills at the same time every day. This depends on how they think the patient will react to the treatment. It's common to start with the lowest dose and increase it as needed. It is best to take Clomid at or around the same time every day. Most people like to take it before bed so they can sleep through some of the side effects they don't like. If three to six cycles of Clomid don't help you get pregnant, you may need to see a fertility specialist and try a more aggressive treatment.
