The idea of transferring risk to reduce loss is almost as old as human society itself. The Babylonians developed what might be considered the first example of insurance, using bottomry contracts that allowed merchants to pay an additional sum on top of loans for cargo shipped by sea, so that the loan would be canceled if the ship was lost.
