When other painkillers did not work well enough or could not be tolerated, oxycodone was used to treat pain that was severe enough to necessitate opioid treatment. It is a member of the class of medications known as opioid analgesics, or painkillers. Oxycodone reduces pain by acting on the central nervous system (CNS).
