Lorazepam(Ativan) is a benzodiazepine medication often prescribed to treat anxiety disorders as well as certain seizure disorders. Serving as a central nervous system depressant, Ativan works by increasing GABA neurotransmitter production which acts to decrease brain activity for a calming effect in the central nervous system.
