Gabapentin was first approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as an anticonvulsant (seizures in some cases) and is now widely used to treat neuropathic pain. The mechanism of action of gabapentin is unclear, but it reduces calcium entry by binding to the α2-δ subunit and blocking voltage-gated calcium channels.
