Texas History Page historian, Kameron K. Searle, rediscovered the Lake Creek Settlement, the earliest Anglo-American settlement in what is today Montgomery County, Texas. Searle’s research further exposed many of the myths and inaccuracies previously reported as the early history of Montgomery County, Texas. One of the myths dispelled was the so-called “Andrew Montgomery Trading Post.” In fact, Searle’s research proved that the town of Montgomery, Texas was founded in the middle of the Lake Creek Settlement and that Andrew Montgomery never owned land or even lived in the Lake Creek Settlement prior to the founding of the town of Montgomery. Hence Andrew Montgomery could not have been the source of the name of the town or the county. In fact, Andrew Montgomery never received a single Mexican land grant from Stephen F. Austin but was actually a colonist in Robertson’s Colony more than a hundred miles from the Lake Creek Settlement. The importance of historians relying on primary sources can never be stressed enough.
