Ativan, chemically known as lorazepam, is mainly indicated for the treatment of anxiety disorders, insomnia, and seizures. It is basically a benzodiazepine drug. Benzodiazepines enhance the activity of a neurotransmitter in the brain called gamma-aminobutyric acid or GABA. GABA causes sedation of the central nervous system.
