Since the introduction of antibiotics, the bacteria they treat have been adapting and changing to become more resistant. These antibiotic-resistant bacteria are called superbugs, and they cause serious bacterial infections that are extremely difficult to treat. One of the key challenges in the fight against superbugs is the detection of drug-resistant bacteria.
